Play for Newtown

Committed to being a diverse and inclusive club with a strong engagement with the local community.

Established in 2002, NBFC has had an integral role in the expansion of AFL in Sydney. In 2020 we launched the first Breakaways men’s team, adopted the mantra “AFL for All”.
The inaugural Division 3 Men’s team not only represented the Breakaways community values but showed the way and are the 2020 Premiers!

Our home ground is Mahoney Oval in Marrickville and we occasionally utilise Henson Park for feature events. Our core values are commitment, competitiveness and inclusivity. Our players are committed to the club, one another and the game – on and off the field.

We are passionate about playing excellent football and challenging ourselves and one another to continually build our skills and football craft.
We welcome players from all levels of experience, backgrounds and walks of life into the Breakaways family.

Frequently asked questions

  • Absolutely! We cater to all skill levels across all of our teams. Our coaching staff and players would love to give you some tips and tricks to help you learn the game and skills in no time.

  • If you’re coming down for one training session to get a feel for the sport, you'll be okay to train in joggers. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle!
You won't be able to play in a game without a mouthguard or football boots. Returning players can point you in the direction of some good brands.

  • As per the AFL Sydney comp, trans and gender-diverse players are welcome to play in the competition where they most feel comfortable. We have a zero-tolerance policy toward transphobia.

  • As coaches have a duty of care to keep players safe during games, they need you to attend at least one training session in a week. If this isn’t possible due to work/life commitments, please reach out to your coaches so they’re aware what’s going on.

  • Absolutely! In PlayHQ, select 'Pay Half of Rego Fees Upfront'. This allows us to register you in the system and ensure you’re covered by the insurance policy.
Our expectation is the full amount will be paid by round 3 of the 2023 season. If this isn’t possible, please contact our treasurer Alex Jayasuriya to organise an alternative plan.

  • We will use Stack TeamApp to let you know about the upcoming games. This is also the system we use to track your availability for games. Make sure you keep notifications turned on so you don’t miss any notifications.

  • Please reach out to our health lead Yves Silveira. He’ll be able to walk you through the claims system and ensure that the physio team is aware of your injury to ensure that you’re appropriately cared for when you’re ready to return to play.
